Sippy Cups

What is the shelf-life of a sippy cup? I had a cupboard full of infant bottles that I could finally clear away and replace with all of our sippy cups (which usually dry and and sit on our counter). But as I was putting them away I was just wondering how long I should actually keep these things around. I admit that I have bleached the heck out of some of them in an attempt to revive them, I have scrubbed some with toothbrushes and others have been fated to the trashcan because there was no going back, if you know what I mean. I am feeling this itch to toss all the spill-proof cups we have and go out and buy new ones, but do I need to?

No, in my opinion, you do not need to throw out the sippy cups. People don't generally throw out plastic cups, tumblers, sport water bottles, plates, bowls, storage containers, etc. The only reason I would toss them is if they leak, or if the removable spout thingy (the spill-proof plastic insert) can no longer be cleaned, or if your child has chewed to death the sippy spout. That's my take. Hope it helps.

See, and I was gonna say... Sure! I like to start fresh sometimes!! It feels good. I do the same thing with socks for the kids. When they start getting all funky with holes or just not as soft as they used to be, I either toss 'em or donate them. I don't keep even one pair. I go to Target and buy a few new packs and dang'it, I can't believe what a special kind of feeling that brings over me! For socks!! Apparently, I'm pretty easily pleased!! Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I've done that with sippy cups over the years, too. So I say, "Go for it, Amber! You're kids are worth it!! Wahoo!!!"

So, Gina, you give the socks you don't want to others? Hmmmm. JUST KIDDING! LOL!!!

Good one - Christine.
Okay ... so based on Christine I should keep scrubbing and based on Gina I should stop scrubbing ... Hmmm ... there are some choices to make.

I say Splurge a little. If it had to be bleached out for mold than I think its time for a new one.

They're SO super cheap at Walmart, if you don't feel like chancing it. I hate the ickiness of trying to scrape out all those tiny nooks and crannies. If you get the Nuby brand, they're only about $1 each, in many varieties of spouts. (I know this because Walmart is ALL we have here, and I now have the entire store memorized. Target!! Where are the Targets???)

It looks like I'm alone here, and cheap!!!

Oh ... I wish I would have gone for Walmart, but of the 5 places we went today, Costco was one of them and they had the Munchkins brand sippy cups. Not my favorite, but they will do. Ryan wants me to keep the oldies around (less washing -- he thinks), so we have some new ones and some old ones now : )
