Hanging On

Just today I cleaned out yet another drawer of "stuff" that is never used but that I have kept around since (well, in this case) almost 8 years. Yep. Wedding registry gifts are somehow difficult to part with. Whoever I was when I picked out those satinny blue and off-white doily placemats ... well, that girl is gone. Not sure how those things ever made it on the registry -- but they did and I think I used them all of ... um ... 2 times. So, off they go to the thrift store. Still, I'm not sure what comfort was brought to me by hanging onto those ugly things. Today I was more than ready to part with them.

"Hold all things lightly, nothing tightly..."
I don't know who said it, but it is a good motto. I think though, that we all hang on to things we shouldn't... I know I do. But, if we stand back, we often have a season of something being REALLY important to us (for whatever reason), and then as our priorities change, we are able to let go. I still have these She-Ra books from when I was a kid, my mom kept them for me. I know Emma would love them, but now as I went back through them to "preview", there was nothing quality in them at all. Definitely not "classic" literature. But I haven't gotten rid of them yet... I'm still "hanging on." =)

I have thought about registry gifts a few times lately as well. (can I admit to owning a toaster and cutlery set, both NIB, in the back of a kitchen cabinet? I should really get rid of those! At this point I should get rid of the old ones and use the shiny unused ones!) I would definitely choose some things differently. So true about feeling like a totally different person.

After putting some dishes away I had to add to my comment. Because it turns out there is also an extra hand mixer back there keeping the other two things company. At least that coffeepot (for coffee-drinking company) I registered for is getting some use... oh, wait it hasn't even been used once. Maybe if I knew how to make coffee... And what about the ice-cream maker! Now THAT we have used. Once. Thanks for making me see that I need to sell some things. :)

Next, we should be able to think about the things that we really enjoy using! :)

I love cleaning out drawers and cabinets, but then you already knew that!

I began after the new year to go through every drawer and shelf in the house and "PURGE." Well I've stalled at the children's rooms, but yesterday had picked it back up at Peter's diaper changer where I was able to put all his cloth diapers into a large ziplock and pack away..the nursing pads I never even needed to begin with, why did I have four boxes of those things anyway....I kept them for baby number two and needed them, NOT, again. As soon as hubby has permanant work done to end our child bearing fruitfulness, hello craigslist.

Nursing Pads anyone?
